ANSWER

GENDER ROLE

The "Revolt of Mother" and Other Stories
Sarah Penn is one of the main characters in the “Revolt of Mother” who is married to Adoniram
Penn for a period of forty years. She is portrayed as a hardworking, strong-willed and patient
woman (Freeman, 45). She endures living in a tiny house with her husband and patient for the
right time to move to a more spacious house with her family. (Essay Writing Services )The two are blessed with four
children and two of them live with their parents. In the period of their early marriage, Adoniram
pledged to build her a new house. To her surprise, she discovers that laborers are breaking the
land to build a barn where livestock will have a shelter instead of a spacious and a better house
on the land Adoniram had promised her earlier. When Adoniram leaves for a business trip the
moment the barn had been completed, Sarah takes advantage of his departure and moves all the
households’ possessions into the newly built structure, stating that it will only require a few
windows and to be partitioned to look perfect.
On the other hand, her husband Adoniram Penn is portrayed as uncommunicative man who does
things in his own ways and expects his wife and his whole family to accept his decision. He
keeps quite concerning her wife’s opinion on building a new and spacious house for the family
and instead builds for a barn for his livestock and talks for the work he is supposed to complete

for the day. Surprisingly at the end of the tale, Adoniram is not that much uncommunicative to
be unable to listen to the needs of his wife. On realizing the extent his wife will go to get a new
house, Adoniram agrees to modify the new barn into a better house to suit his family needs and
for a more spacious dwelling.
In the “Revolt of Mother," Freeman portrays the female gender to be controlled by the male
gender. As seen in the tale, Sarah is expected to follow all his husband suggests and abides by
them. Her husband does not care about her decisions and even snubs to her need of building a
new house for the family and talks about his work to accomplish for the day. As observed in the
"Revolt of Mother," Do you think women should be denied the right to take part in decision
making in the society?
A New England Nun
Louisa Ellis is a character in the "A New England Nun" narrative that portrays her as a patient
and a woman who keeps her promise. She has lived single for 14 years waiting for her lover Joe
Dagger to come back from Australia where he went to hunt for a better life. Louisa had promised
to marry Joe when he gets back home from Australia (Freeman, 23). She is portrayed to keep her
house clean and a hardworking woman who provides for herself. The moment Joe got back
home; it was her time to fill her promise of marrying him. Despite of her long wait for Joe, he
cheats on her with Lily in the first two weeks of his comeback. Louisa on realizing this, she ends
her relationship with Joe and decides to live a single life. Lily on the other hand promises never
to marry any other man.

Surname 3
In the “A New England Nun”," Freeman portrays woman as home keepers. Louisa is described
to meticulously keep her house clean. Joe tracks dirt on her clean floor as Louisa will obviously
clean his mess. On the other hand, women are portrayed to only stick to one man and maintain
relationships while men have the right to have as many women as they can. The fact that Louisa
stayed single for 14 years to wait for Joe, he too engages with Lilly not considering how much
Louisa had waited for him to fulfill her promise. Lastly, when she finally breaks up with Joe, she
decides to stay single for the rest of her life. Lilly on the other hand reveals to Joe that she will
never marry any man creating the title “A New England Nun.” Therefore, the question is, Do
you think women should also date as many men the same way men date many women?
One Good Time
One Good Time is a bit hilarious. The departure of Richard Stone leaves his daughter and wife
with a wealth of $1,500 in life insurance. Everybody anticipates Narcissa to eventually wed her
longtime boyfriend, William Crane, however after the burial; she proclaims that she has never
had fun or something she has ever wanted (Elbert and Monika, 200). She has spent her entire life
on the farm and before she weds, she wants to have some fun (One Good Time) She took her
mother to New York city, and plans to get back home in a year’s time. She promises she will
wed William when she gets back , but he should be free to wed another woman if he wants
because she will understand. Men are allowed to marry whoever woman they like as women are
to stick to one according Freeman in her artwork One Good Time. Narcissa did not have fun
when his father was alive and she has to have one good time before marrying William.
Therefore, do you think Narcissa should have to strictly marry William?
